96

96 follows Ram, a quiet travel photographer who returns to his school in Thanjavur and helps arrange a reunion for the class of 1996. He meets Janaki, called Jaanu, the girl he loved as a teenager, after twenty-two years apart. Jaanu now lives in Singapore with her husband and daughter, while Ram has stayed alone and tied to his memories. The film moves between their school days and one long night in Chennai, with a soft, sad, and hopeful tone.

The main audience-visible challenge to social norms comes from the film’s warm treatment of Jaanu’s old love after she is married. She spends the night talking, walking, singing, and holding hands with Ram, while the story gives little space to her husband’s side. This choice can feel like a gentle challenge to strict ideas about marriage and emotional loyalty, but the film does not use activist speeches or identity slogans. Its strongest message is about memory, missed chances, and accepting that love can remain without the couple starting a new life together.
