Franz Jägerstätter is an Austrian farmer who lives with his wife, Fani, and their daughters in the mountain village of St. Radegund. When Germany takes control of Austria, the army orders Franz to swear loyalty to Hitler and fight in the war. Franz refuses because his Catholic faith and sense of right and wrong will not let him serve an evil government. The film follows the pressure on his family, his arrest, and his long wait for death in a quiet and serious style.
The story focuses on faith, marriage, family duty, and the cost of obeying evil power. Franz and Fani face shame, poverty, threats, and fear from their neighbors while they try to protect their children. The film shows priests, soldiers, judges, and local leaders asking Franz to give up his stand for safety. Its main message praises personal conscience, Christian sacrifice, and the courage to reject an unjust order.
