Isabel runs a struggling orphanage in Kolkata, India, and cares deeply for a boy named Jai. She travels to New York to ask Theresa Young, a rich media boss, for money to keep the home open. Theresa invites Isabel to her daughter Grace’s wedding, where Isabel meets Oscar, her old love and Theresa’s husband. The wedding opens old family secrets about love, adoption, illness, and the choices that shape a family. The film uses a serious, tearful tone with rich homes set against the hard life of the orphanage.
The film puts two women at the center of the main conflict, and it gives both women strong control over money, work, family, and the truth. The remake changes the two main roles from men to women, so the story repeatedly presents women as the main leaders and decision makers. A wedding speech praises Theresa for changing her industry, raising a family, and making a great deal of money, which adds a brief women’s empowerment message. These points are easy to notice, but the story mainly follows motherhood, adoption, charity, guilt, and family repair instead of a wider political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for After the Wedding.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts two white women in the two main roles. The source story had male leads, and this remake switches both roles to women. The production notes tie the choice to the lack of complex leading roles for women and current debate about gender and power. Theresa is a powerful CEO and Isabel runs an orphanage, so the casting is tied to female leadership.
58%
Woke political dialogue
A wedding toast praises Theresa for having power, changing her industry, raising a family, and making a great deal of money. The toast presents female success in business and family life as something worth celebrating. This message appears in one short scene and does not drive the main conflict.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes two women the center of its family and money conflict. Theresa is a powerful media boss, and Isabel runs an orphanage while resisting control from a rich donor. The women make most of the important choices, while Oscar mainly reacts to their secrets. The story also includes a short female empowerment message, but motherhood, adoption, guilt, and family repair remain the main subjects.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly contrasts a cash-strapped orphanage in India with a wealthy New York media family. Isabel questions why a rich donor can demand her presence and judge whether her charity deserves money. The story shows wealth as a source of control, but Theresa is not treated as a simple villain. The critique stays focused on personal guilt, charity, and class.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes the two male leads in the 2006 Danish source film into Isabel and Theresa, played by Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore. The change makes the family secret center on a woman who gave birth and a woman who raised the daughter. This reshapes the past relationship, the adoption story, and the main conflict. The gender change is a central design choice that affects the cast and the plot.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No title-specific anti-woke complaints were found in the reviewed social, audience, and news coverage. The separate X research pass also found no anti-woke reaction for this film.

Creator track record context
Bart Freundlich, Susanne Bier, and Anders Thomas Jensen have little public record of identity-politics activism. Julianne Moore is the main higher-scoring figure because of her public support for gender equality, LGBT rights, Planned Parenthood, and gun safety. The film’s gender-switch explanation also links the remake to more leading roles for women. This gives mild creator track record context, not a strong activist pattern.
