AlphaGo follows Lee Sedol, a South Korean champion of the ancient Chinese board game Go. In 2016, he faces AlphaGo, a computer program made by Google's DeepMind team, in a five-game match in Seoul. Lee has spent most of his life mastering a game built on judgment, memory, and creative moves. The film uses the contest as a tense, emotional story about pride, pressure, defeat, and the future of human intelligence.
The documentary shows people building a tool that surprises even its creators, while people also learn from that tool. The film gives Lee's losses serious emotional weight, but it also respects the programmers and presents their work as a human achievement. The match becomes a test of pride, pressure, creativity, and the limits of human skill. The focus stays on Go, artificial intelligence, and the uneasy feeling of watching a machine beat a world champion.
