Amateur follows Terron Forte, a gifted 14-year-old basketball player who is already playing against older students. His family lives with money problems, and his father sees basketball as a chance to change their lives. A coach recruits Terron to Liberty Prep, an elite school that promises better training and a path to college and the NBA. The drama feels tense and rough as Terron learns that the school cares more about winning than learning.
Terron also has dyscalculia, which makes numbers hard to read in class and on the scoreboard. His mother pushes him to value school, while his father and coach push him toward a sports career. The program lets players miss classes, live in poor housing, and serve the interests of coaches, colleges, and shoe brands. Terron uses social media to expose a private deal, then must choose whether to protect his future, his family, or the people who used him.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Amateur.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The movie uses a black basketball player, his Black parents, and a mixed team without making identity a subject. It gives no public identity message about the casting.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film includes repeated talk about athletes being used while schools, coaches, and brands make money. Terron’s father, Coach Gaines, and teammates discuss payment, sponsorships, and the value of a player’s labor. The dialogue supports a mild labor-rights message, but it does not push identity, gender, or DEI ideas.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The movie gives Terron dyscalculia, family money stress, and a difficult path as a young athlete. It treats these as personal and sports problems rather than as a repeated identity-politics message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly presents prep schools, the NCAA path, and sports brands as a system that uses children for money and status. The players miss classes, live in poor conditions, and are treated as products. The criticism stays inside youth basketball and does not attack Western culture, Christianity, family life, or traditional gender roles.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original sports story that grew from Koo’s earlier short. It does not alter an established character, source-world figure, or real historical person in an identity-related way.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public reviews and audience posts mainly discuss basketball, corruption, the learning disability, and the film’s uneven plot. No reliable anti-woke backlash was found in news, audience posts, or the supplied X pass.
0%
Creator track record context
Ryan Koo has a stored score of 28/100 and a background built around film access and player rights. His work includes personal identity themes, but his public profile is mainly about craft and independent filmmaking. The stored producer scores are mostly low and do not show a shared activist campaign. This supports a low creator track record context score.
