After Civil War, Scott Lang is stuck under house arrest. He teams up with Hope van Dyne and Hank Pym to open a quantum tunnel and rescue Janet van Dyne. They run into Sonny Burch, a black market dealer, and Ava Starr, known as Ghost, whose body is unstable and needs quantum energy. The movie is a heist and chase comedy that centers on family bonds. Those bonds include Scott and Cassie, Hope with Hank and Janet, and Ghost’s ties to her father and mentor.
Identity politics do not drive the main plot. Viewers still see Hope as a full equal combat lead with shared title billing, and Janet and Ghost also play strong, capable roles. Ghost is a gender swap from a male comics character, and press and marketing treated the film as Marvel’s first female co-title and a step for gender equality. Interviews stressed equal partners and women as fierce and equal to men. The film itself has little activist dialogue, no queer storyline, and only light institutional critique, so the visible woke signal stays mid-light rather than extreme.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Woke representation / casting
The San Francisco setting supports a multiethnic supporting cast such as Luis, Dave, Jimmy Woo, and Bill Foster. The main driver is gender emphasis in major heroic and villain roles. Hope is a co-titled equal combat lead, Janet is a scientist hero, and Ghost is a capable antagonist. Premiere and press framed the film as Marvel’s first female co-title and a gender equality step, not as a race-swap showcase.
36%
Woke political dialogue
There is no sustained activist talk on race, systemic oppression, patriarchy, or DEI. Characters banter through heists and family stakes. Competence shows in action rather than speeches. Equal partner beats are behavioral, not slogan heavy.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
The main structure is family rescue plus quantum heist comedy. A secondary layer shows Hope as a full co-hero and female skill in science and combat across Hope, Janet, and Ghost. Press often treated gender equality as a big takeaway. That weight is real in billing and roles but is not the story’s central subject like a purpose-built empowerment lecture.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Ghost’s past includes S.H.I.E.L.D. using her as an operative without curing her. That is standard superhero corrupt organization material. It is not framed as modern activist critique of patriarchy, whiteness, capitalism, Christianity, or traditional family norms. Family and partnership are affirmed instead.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Ghost is gender swapped from a male comics industrial spy into Ava Starr. Reed and the team said they had free rein to reinvent her as a woman, to fit a fathers and daughters theme, and to add another strong female MCU figure. Writers also linked a female villain to inclusiveness and treated Wasp as an equal partner. Hope as Wasp matches comics elevation rather than swapping Ant-Man, and Bill Foster’s race is not a race swap of the comics character.
48%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was no large lasting anti-woke campaign against this 2018 film like some later MCU titles faced. Some fans discussed the Ghost gender swap and sparse agenda talk showed up later. Loud woke Ant-Man and DEI noise mostly attaches to Quantumania or wider later MCU debate. The score reflects thin but real limited anti-identity complaints, not a culture war centerpiece.
12%
Creator track record context
Cached context only puts Reed near 10, the writers near 7 to 9, and Rudd near 19, with classic comics creators in the low teens. Feige, Broussard, and Sarah Halley Finn sit near the high forties to mid fifties. For this title, Marvel production priorities around a female co-lead and the Ghost flip matter more than a low activism director and writers. Overall creator context is mid-low for a Phase Three MCU entry.
