Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ballerina.
Woke representation / casting
The film stars a female lead taking over a franchise previously led by a man. However, her role is fully supported by the established rules of the John Wick universe, which already featured young women training in the Ruska Roma assassin school. The supporting cast features standard, non-political choices.
20%
Woke political dialogue
The characters speak in standard action-movie dialogue focused on revenge, survival, and assassin rules. There are no political speeches, modern activist terms, or social justice lecturing.

Production
Identity-driven story themes
The plot is a very traditional revenge story about a child avenging her father. While some pre-release marketing focused on female empowerment, the actual narrative treats her quest as a personal battle rather than a larger social statement.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film features standard corruption within a fictional secret society of killers. It does not critique Western culture, traditional family structures, or patriarchy, nor does it attack real-world institutions or religion.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie adds new characters and details to the existing John Wick universe without changing any established characters, history, or rules to fit modern identity politics.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Before the film was released, some online critics labeled it a woke cash-grab and predicted a girlboss disaster. After it underperformed at the box office, some conservative commentators attributed its failure to girlboss fatigue and audience rejection of female-led action spin-offs.
45%
Creator track record context
The writers, directors, and producers have no history of progressive political activism. Star and producer Ana de Armas has actively spoken out against changing classic male roles like James Bond into women just for diversity.
