Bastille Day (also released as The Take) is a fast-paced 2016 action-thriller set in modern Paris on the eve of the French national holiday. The story follows Michael Mason, a slick American pickpocket who inadvertently steals a bag containing a bomb. After the bomb explodes, Michael is branded a terrorist. Sean Briar, a tough CIA agent, tracks Michael down but quickly realizes he is just a pawn in a larger game. Together, they must expose a conspiracy involving corrupt French special forces who orchestrate fake terror threats to pull off a bank heist. The narrative focuses on high-energy stunts, rooftop chases, and buddy-cop banter. The female characters struggle realistically in physical situations rather than displaying flawless combat skills. While the plot touches on protests and media manipulation, these serve strictly as cover for a greed-driven heist. It is a traditional crime thriller focused on action, greed, and survival.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Bastille Day.
Woke representation / casting
The casting is modern and diverse, featuring Idris Elba as the central CIA agent, Kelly Reilly as his station chief, and Charlotte Le Bon as a French activist. However, these roles are played traditionally, avoiding identity signaling, quota-style casting, or unrealistic female combat dominance.
25%
Woke political dialogue
The dialogue consists of standard buddy-cop action movie banter and heist exposition. It avoids preachy activist vocabulary, progressive moralizing, or modern social justice rhetoric.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story touches on themes of media manipulation, immigration, and xenophobia. However, these elements are subverted when the narrative reveals they are merely a fake front staged by corrupt white police officers to pull off a bank heist, rather than a genuine exploration of systemic identity struggle.
25%
Western institutional / cultural critique
While the plot involves a corrupt, rogue faction of French special forces, the corruption is framed as a localized criminal scheme rather than a systemic critique of Western institutions, capitalism, or traditional values.
0%
