Beckett is an ordinary American tourist who is traveling through Greece with his girlfriend, April. After he falls asleep at the wheel, their car crashes into a house and April dies. Beckett survives, but he sees a red-haired boy and soon learns that police and armed agents want him dead. He runs through mountain towns, trains, and Athens while he tries to reach the US embassy and understand the trap around him.
The chase is tied to a missing boy, a Greek election, street protests, and a fight between a left-wing coalition and a far-right group. Two female activists say the police are tied to the far-right group and drive Beckett toward Athens. The story presents the activists as useful allies, while a powerful American official helps hide a crime linked to money and organized crime. These political and anti-right-wing ideas recur through the plot, but the movie remains mainly a grim manhunt about grief, fear, guilt, and survival.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Beckett.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The story uses an American tourist and Greek characters in a modern setting. The film does not make race, gender, sexuality, or diversity part of its casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film names Sunrise as a far-right, ultranationalist group. Activists explain that the group has police ties and that Karras wants to reverse EU austerity rules. A news report names an extreme leftist group, and the embassy official later dismisses the activists’ view as a political story. These lines recur around the chase and make the political fight part of the main mystery.
43%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie makes two left-wing activists important allies during the second half. The activists say a far-right nationalist group works with the police and help Beckett reach a rally. The story treats their warning as useful, even though the final reveal says the kidnapping was driven by crime and money. The movie uses political groups as a major story engine, but it does not center race, gender, sexuality, or a modern identity campaign.
37%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie presents Greek police as willing to attack people and hide the truth about a kidnapping. The story shows an American embassy official helping keep the real crime hidden. Characters blame EU austerity rules and a financial establishment for Greece’s hardship. These ideas shape the conspiracy and rally scenes, while the final reveal also shows that money and organized crime drive the plot.
51%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original thriller, not an adaptation of known characters or historical events. No established character or real figure is changed for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research pass found no anti-woke complaints. Web and audience discussion focused on acting, pacing, plot logic, subtitles, and the confusing ending.

Creator track record context
Filomarino and Rice have no strong public record of activist or identity-politics work. Producer Luca Guadagnino often explores queer desire, and producer Federico Marchetti has a record of inclusion and diversity work. Most of the other listed producers have ordinary film or business profiles. This gives mild supporting context, but it does not show a strong activist pattern behind this film.
