Fikret is a nervous shopkeeper whose 21-year marriage ends just as Solmaz is left by her long-time partner. He moves near Solmaz, a lively nightclub singer, and agrees to pretend to be the father of her daughter Zeynep. The lie grows when Zeynep plans to marry Emirhan, whose large and traditional family comes from Adana. The story moves between Istanbul and Adana and uses loud wedding chaos, family secrets, and warm comedy. Solmaz’s home is a family built from friends, and the group treats loyalty as more important than blood ties. Behiye is a trans singer and close friend who helps run the wedding, while the film includes a direct correction about using the word “trans.” The story mocks tough-guy behavior, honor talk, and the idea that a woman singer is not respectable, and it often makes women more capable than the men. The ending still celebrates marriage and a settled home, so the identity and gender messages sit inside a broad wedding comedy rather than taking over the whole plot.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Between Family.
Woke representation / casting
Behiye is a trans singer played by Ayta Sözeri, and she is a visible member of the main family group. Solmaz is also a strong central woman who leads the household plan. The modern Turkish setting makes the Turkish cast itself ordinary and does not add a score. The visible trans casting and repeated female-led group give the movie a clear but limited representation signal.
40%
Woke political dialogue
The film includes a direct exchange about calling Behiye “trans” instead of using an unclear label. The wording turns respectful language into a small lesson for Fikret and the audience. Other dialogue attacks honor rules and the idea that Solmaz is less respectable because she sings in a nightclub. These lines appear around the wedding but never become a political speech.
29%
Identity-driven story themes
The film builds a family from friends and treats loyalty as more important than blood ties. Behiye is accepted by the group and later by Haşmet, even though the wedding party first hides her identity as an aunt. Solmaz pushes back against shame aimed at a single mother and nightclub singer, while Fikret and Haşmet are often helpers, fools, or weak figures. The ending still rewards marriage and a settled home, so the identity themes are important but mixed with traditional family values.
53%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film compares a less traditional Istanbul household with a wealthy and traditional Adana family. The Adana father’s tough-guy behavior and honor claims are mocked when his family secrets show that its moral image is false. Solmaz and Behiye often handle problems better than the men, and Fikret becomes the timid helper. The ending brings the groups together and still praises family and marriage, which limits the critique.
40%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story about Fikret, Solmaz, and their families. It does not change established characters, source material, or historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Available coverage shows ordinary quality debate and mostly positive audience reaction, not a sustained complaint that the film pushes woke or DEI ideas. The X pass found no anti-woke complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
The director has a varied commercial career and no strong record of activist or DEI campaigning. The writer often gives women social and work freedom and has spoken about women in media, censorship, and pluralism. The producers and casting director have no known identity-first public profile. This gives a mild context signal, not a strong activist pattern.
