Brick follows Tim, a video game designer, and Olivia, an architect whose marriage is breaking down after the loss of their child. When Olivia decides to leave, a smooth black wall seals every way out of their Hamburg apartment building. The couple loses its water and phone service, so it breaks through the building and joins frightened neighbors. The film grows more violent and distrustful as the group searches for an exit, which gives the story a tense and grim survival tone.
Most of the story follows grief and a damaged marriage as the neighbors try to survive. The group includes Ana, a Black German woman, Yuri, a Turkish Austrian man, and Lea, a young queer woman, but identity does not drive the mystery. Olivia and Tim share the practical work of escape, and the story does not turn her into a repeated superwoman or make him a useless joke. The clearest social message treats the wall as a picture of people separated into bubbles who no longer trust shared facts. A few angry lines blame rich groups and capitalism, but those ideas stay inside a science fiction mystery instead of becoming a long activist speech.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Brick.
Woke representation / casting
Olivia is a Costa Rican German woman in a central couple with a white German man. The trapped group also includes a Black German woman and a Turkish Austrian man. Hamburg is a modern and mixed city, and the film does not present these choices as a diversity goal. The result is a mild representation signal rather than a strong identity-led cast design.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Marvin briefly shouts “Capitalist pigs!” during a fight over the failed escape route. Yuri also talks about the deep state, a new world order, and lying mainstream news. These lines show political anger and conspiracy talk, but they are short character outbursts. The story does not turn them into a repeated identity or activist message.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
Lea is a queer young woman in the trapped group. Her identity is a small part of the film and does not drive the mystery or the ending. Olivia also presses Tim to face grief and speak about their broken marriage. The film presents that conflict as a personal problem, not as a wider lesson about gender or identity.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film connects the wall to social walls between groups and countries. The plot also blames a private defense company for a failed system that traps ordinary people. Marvin calls unseen watchers “capitalist pigs,” and other characters suspect rich elites are treating the crisis as a game. The mystery finally treats the disaster as a technology failure and a survival problem, so the critique stays broad and limited.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Tim, Olivia, and their neighbors. It does not adapt known characters or change a real historical event.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account said Netflix ruined the premise with “woke culture” and extra family drama. The post had about 11 likes and no known pickup. Searches found no sustained campaign, boycott, or review-bombing, while most public comments focused on plot holes, the ending, and the film’s quality.

Creator track record context
Philip Koch’s public work is mainly genre storytelling and shows no clear activist pattern. The producers have no clear record of a DEI or identity-driven agenda. Koch has described the wall as a symbol of social divisions, separate groups, and fake news. That adds a mild social message, but it is not a queer or identity-politics focus.
