Closet Monster follows Oscar Madly, an imaginative high-school student in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He wants to leave town to study special-effects makeup, but his parents’ divorce, his father’s anger, and a violent memory keep pulling him back. As a child, Oscar saw a gay teenager attacked with a metal rod, and the memory shapes his fear of growing up gay. A talking hamster, strange visions, and scary body images give the drama a dark, dreamlike tone.
Oscar’s struggle with being gay is the film’s main story, not a side plot. He feels drawn to his male co-worker Wilder while fighting shame, fear, and the belief that he must hide his softer side. The story treats accepting himself as the way to break free from fear, and it presents homophobia and harsh ideas about masculinity as sources of harm. Oscar’s friendship with Gemma, his feelings for Wilder, and his bond with Buffy all help him face his past and choose a more honest life.
