Cosmos follows three friends who spend a night in the English countryside watching the sky from a car filled with homemade radio and telescope gear. Harry is an astronomer, Roy is a satellite engineer, and Mike builds software for radio images. Their quiet outing changes when Mike catches a strange signal and sends a message back. The film uses a slow, talk-heavy start before it turns into a tense first-contact mystery about proving the discovery before the signal is lost.
The story gives its main attention to male friendship, old hurt, lost work, and the need to forgive. The three men solve the problem by combining different kinds of skill, from astronomy to engineering to computer work. The film treats science and the search for life as hopeful and human. Its simple message is that a huge discovery matters more when friends share it and work together.
