Devotion follows Navy pilot Jesse Brown and his wingman Tom Hudner during the Korean War. Jesse is the first black pilot in U.S. Navy history. He faces hard training, danger in the air, and unfair treatment on the ground. The film is a serious war drama about friendship, duty, and sacrifice. The tone is earnest and patriotic, with big flying scenes and a sad true ending.
Race is a clear part of the story because it is based on real life. Viewers see racist neighbors, mean words aimed at Jesse, a tough mirror scene where he repeats insults, and tension about how Tom tries to help him. The movie also pushes a message about standing beside someone instead of “saving” them. These parts sit next to a straight military story of honor, combat, and Medal of Honor service. A normal viewer will notice the race and friendship-with-ally themes, but the film still plays mainly as a Korean War hero movie, not as a modern slogan film.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Devotion.
Woke representation / casting
Leads match real history: a black actor as Jesse Brown and a white actor as Tom Hudner. Supporting cast fits a 1950s Navy unit. Race is visible because the true story is about the first black Navy pilot, not because of quota-style swaps or invented diverse leads. Marketing highlights that pioneer role, but casting itself is story-driven and historically sound.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Viewers hear racist abuse, talk about unfair officers, and lines about not “saving” Jesse but standing with him. The mirror scene with racial insults is heavy and hard to miss. Talk stays in a 1950s military setting rather than modern activist slogans, so it lands as period conflict plus light allyship messaging.
36%
Identity-driven story themes
Race, isolation, and pioneering status run through the film beside war and friendship. Jesse’s life as the only black pilot in the unit shapes many ground scenes. Themes feel historical and personal more than like a lecture on today’s identity politics, but a normal viewer still notices race as a major story pillar.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows racism inside and around the Navy in that era. It does not paint the U.S. military or country as pure villains. It still honors service, loyalty, the Medal of Honor, and duty. Critique of period racism is clear but mild next to the patriotic war-hero frame.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Core people and the crash rescue match history. Some made-up or pumped-up moments (fight scene, bridge order plot) stress racism and allyship more than records do. Those are small dramatic boosts, not race or gender rewrites of real figures. Not a large identity-driven rewrite of the source.
15%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No major, documented wave of right-leaning or anti-woke attacks treating the film as DEI propaganda or woke agenda cinema. Coverage stayed on history, craft, and box office. Score stays at zero for lack of that kind of backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores are low overall. Dillard is the highest relevant voice at 30 and frames the film around honest history and personal Navy family ties. Makos, Powell, and most producers sit near zero with military, commercial, or craft profiles rather than activist careers.
