In 1872, Jackson is a young Civil War veteran who wakes to find his home burning and his wife, Alexsandra, gone. He rides south through the rough land of the American West and into Mexico, following the men he believes took her. Wounds, guilt, and strange visions make the trip harder as he meets killers, an old army friend, and a native family who treat his wounds. The film has a bleak, violent, dreamlike tone and uses a late twist to question what Jackson sees.
The story centers on Jackson’s damaged mind, his need to rescue Alexsandra, and the harm caused by his anger. The film briefly uses Native healing and the past conflict between settlers and native people as part of Jackson’s recovery. The film places a black army friend, Mexican fighters, a Chinese traveler, and native characters around the white lead. Their scenes move Jackson through the chase and reveal the film’s focus on trauma, guilt, revenge, love, and the danger of confusing memory with truth.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Diablo.
Woke representation / casting
The film places Scott Eastwood’s white male veteran at the center. The supporting cast includes Danny Glover as a black army friend, Adam Beach as a native chief, Tzi Ma as a Chinese traveler, and several Mexican characters. Roeck said he set out to find a diverse supporting cast. Those choices are visible, but they form brief frontier encounters rather than an identity-led group.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The spoken scenes focus on the rescue, war trauma, violence, and Jackson’s visions. The film does not give its characters modern identity, DEI, or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The Native group gives Jackson shelter, physical care, and a peyote vision test. The group also presents Native spiritual teaching as a way to guide a damaged white veteran. Adam Beach described the film as showing Native historical trauma and healing. The theme is visible, yet it stays inside one short part of Jackson’s journey.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows postwar violence, personal guilt, and conflict between settlers and native people. It does not attack modern family life, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Diablo is an original Western about fictional people. The film does not change a known character, source story, or real historical figure for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The film’s reported backlash concerns weak acting, plot holes, pacing, and the twist. X searches found no anti-woke reaction, and no major report ties this film to DEI or identity-politics complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
The director’s public record centers on independent genre films and craft. The writer has no known history of activist or identity-politics work. The producers have no clear public DEI pattern, and the casting directors have only limited related context. Roeck’s Diablo interviews focus on PTSD, Western craft, and independent control.
