Dil Bechara follows Kizie Basu, a young woman in Jamshedpur who lives with thyroid cancer and carries an oxygen tank. She meets Manny, a lively young man who survived bone cancer and uses an artificial leg, at a cancer support group. Manny and his friend JP pull Kizie into a small film, and Manny and Kizie fall in love while time runs short. The film moves from jokes and songs to grief as the illness returns. The film’s strongest message is that sick people still want ordinary joys, romance, friendship, and control over their own choices. Kizie rejects being praised only for being brave, while Manny hides fear behind jokes before he finally breaks down. The story gives central screen time to illness, disability, and a friend losing his sight, but it treats these parts as the heart of the romance rather than as a political cause. Its Indian setting, Bengali family, Tamil word “seri,” and local film culture root the adapted story in India.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dil Bechara.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers a cancer patient, a young man with an artificial leg, and a friend losing his sight. These are audience-visible disability roles across the main group. The story makes their conditions necessary to the romance and does not frame the casting as a diversity campaign, so the score stays low.
16%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue includes hope, illness, romance, and ordinary jokes. It does not push identity politics, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes illness and disability central to the love story. Kizie wants ordinary teenage joys instead of being praised only for bravery. Manny hides fear behind jokes and later breaks down. These are humane character themes rather than a repeated activist argument about identity.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Manny is a male lead who does not stay an unbeatable, macho hero. The film shows his fear and tears when his cancer returns. The story does not attack family life, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions. The softer view of masculinity is not framed as a political argument.
10%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes the American teenagers in The Fault in Our Stars into Indian characters named Kizie and Manny. It moves the story to Jamshedpur and gives Kizie a Bengali family, while Manny uses a Tamil word as the couple’s private signal. These identity and culture changes fit the Indian setting and are not presented as an activist message.
20%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported debate centered on Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, fan grief, online ratings, and the film’s quality. No sustained complaint that the film pushed woke, DEI, identity-politics, or left-wing messaging was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Mukesh Chhabra has a long record of giving auditions and newcomers more access. Rucha Pathak has backed films about women, injustice, disability, and overlooked people. John Green has LGBT-themed writing and health charity work, while Shashank Khaitan often writes about gender and social pressure. Suprotim Sengupta has no clear activist pattern, so the team shows a moderate creator track record context.
