Fatherhood follows Matt Logelin, a new father whose wife, Liz, dies from a blood clot in her lungs soon after giving birth to their daughter, Maddy. Matt stays in Boston and refuses to send Maddy away, even when Liz’s mother doubts that he can raise a baby alone. He struggles with grief, work, dating, school problems, and the daily mess of caring for a child. Friends, family, and a new girlfriend help him learn that good parenting means being present and asking for help. The movie mixes sad scenes with broad jokes and ends as a warm family story.
The clearest woke elements come from the film’s repeated focus on gender rules and identity-linked casting. Maddy dislikes skirts, chooses pants and boys’ underwear, and is bullied by boys and challenged by her Catholic school. Matt defends her clothing choice and later wears a skirt to school, which presents resistance to a traditional dress rule as kind and funny. The film also turns a real white father into a black father and presents a good black dad as an important image, but race and gender politics stay below the main story of grief, family, and fatherhood.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Fatherhood.
Woke representation / casting
The film changes the real Matthew Logelin from white to Black and gives most close family and friend roles to black actors. Kevin Hart said the change could show a good black father, and release coverage repeated that goal. The story does not make race a conflict, but the lead casting and public framing make representation visible.
40%
Woke political dialogue
Matt tells a Catholic school that a boy wearing a skirt would be none of its business. The film repeats this issue through Maddy’s pants and boys’ underwear. These lines support clothing freedom but do not become a wider political debate.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Maddy rejects skirts and chooses clothes sold for boys. Matt backs her choice and later wears a skirt to school. The film presents self-expression and a caring black father as positive parts of the family story. These themes recur but remain secondary to grief and parenting.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows an all-mothers parenting group turning Matt away because he is a father. The workplace treats his baby as a problem, and the Catholic school punishes Maddy for wearing pants. Matt challenges the school rule, and the nun is shown as rigid. The movie still values parents, family, and female role models, so the critique stays narrow.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
The real Matthew Logelin was white, but the film presents him and much of his family as Black. Kevin Hart said he wanted to build an experience for black fathers, and Higher Ground backed the film. This is a major identity change to a true story, even though the plot does not add a race-based conflict.
40%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Movieguide objected to the Catholic school scenes and called the dress-code conflict a politically correct element. A Federalist essay described the film as different from Hollywood’s leftist script, but it praised the movie rather than attacking it. No large anti-woke campaign about Fatherhood was found.
12%
Creator track record context
Paul Weitz and Dana Stevens have past work tied to feminist and progressive themes. Kim Taylor-Coleman has a record of supporting diverse casting. Most listed producers and the other casting directors have little public activist history. This gives the film a moderate context signal, but the movie is less political than some of that past work.
