Guy is a cheerful bank teller who follows the same routine each day in Free City. He learns that Free City is a violent online game and that he is a background character run by computer code. Guy teams up with Millie, a player who helped build the game, and fights to save his friends before the company replaces their world. The film uses action, jokes, video-game tricks, and a warm story about choice, kindness, and friendship. Millie is a skilled programmer and fighter who tries to prove the company stole her work. The film gives a woman game character, first made to be a pretty sidekick, a new life after she rejects that role and writes a book about gender roles and “the patriarchy.” A friend jokes that Guy’s story sounds like “white privilege,” while Keys says the book attacks gender roles. These moments add feminist ideas and gender talk in short scenes, while the main story stays focused on free choice, stolen code, and stopping a greedy boss.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Free Guy.
Woke representation / casting
Jodie Comer said Molotov Girl should look like an avatar made by a woman, not a “man’s ideal.” Costume designer Marlene Stewart said the film shows women’s power through character, mind, and story. The film connects that choice to Millie, a woman who designs and fights through her own avatar.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Mouser calls Keys’s story about debt and failed dreams “full of white privilege.” Keys says Bombshell’s memoir attacks “gender roles” and “the patriarchy.” Millie calls Guy the first “non-toxic guy” she has kissed in a long time.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
Millie leads the real-world fight to prove Antwan stole her game code. She also plays Molotov Girl, a skilled fighter who helps Guy challenge Antwan in the game. The film presents Millie as a woman creator and action hero beside male programmer Keys and male hero Guy.
39%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The game first makes Bombshell a beautiful character meant to be a player’s companion. After Guy tells the game characters they can choose their lives, she leaves that role and writes a book against gender roles. The film treats her new choice as freedom from a gender rule.
