Pastor Dave Hill returns to his church in Arkansas after being released from jail over a fight about his sermons. His church sits on the grounds of a state university, where leaders want to remove it after a fire kills his friend, Pastor Jude. Dave asks his estranged atheist brother Pearce, a lawyer, to help him fight the school. The serious drama follows Dave as anger, grief, and pride test his faith.
The film gives a short but clear place to modern social justice language. Josh calls Jesus the “ultimate social justice warrior” and says Jesus honored women and helped mistreated people. Another scene says college leaders speak about diversity, tolerance, and inclusion while treating the church as unwanted. These ideas add a brief activist layer, but the main story is about Christian belief, forgiveness, religious freedom, and choosing peace over revenge.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is mostly white, and the black pastors are supporting characters tied to the church story. The film does not frame their casting as a diversity goal or build a representation-first group.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film has a short but clear talk about civil rights and social justice. Josh calls Jesus the “ultimate social justice warrior” and says Jesus honored women and helped mistreated people. Another scene uses diversity, tolerance, and inclusion while arguing that the university excludes Christians. The lines are audience-visible, but they support a Christian message and do not drive the whole movie.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film centers on Christian faith, grief, forgiveness, and religious freedom. The church dispute is about church property and belief, not a race, gender, sexuality, or DEI cause. No identity-first character arc drives the story.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film criticizes campus protest culture and diversity claims instead of presenting a modern activist critique of Christianity or Western institutions. It treats the church and Christian faith as worth protecting.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film continues existing characters and adds a new legal conflict. It does not change anyone’s race, sex, sexuality, or hero role.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke backlash was found. The supplied X pass found none, and web reviews mostly attacked the film as conservative Christian propaganda or praised it as not woke. Those comments do not say the film pushes woke or DEI content.
0%
Creator track record context
Not present. The supplied creator records show mainly Christian, family, and production work. The listed creators have no clear record of DEI or identity-politics activism.
