Roberto Duran grows up poor in Panama and fights his way into professional boxing. Trainer Ray Arcel helps him turn raw power into real skill in the ring. The film follows his rise, his love life, his fame, and the big fights that made him known. It includes the famous rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard where Duran quits. The tone stays tough, loud, and personal, with pride and anger always close to the surface.
Duran’s drive is tied to love of Panama and hard feelings about United States control of the canal near his home. Those feelings feed his trash talk and his need to win against American stars. Flashbacks show canal zone history and street unrest as the roots of that anger. The main story still centers on boxing, friendship, ego, fame, and a later comeback for pride. Modern identity politics and social justice lectures are not what the film is about.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Hands of Stone.
Woke representation / casting
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Duran voices anger at Americans and turns down help from an American trainer. Those lines come from canal-era pride and old personal pain. They are not modern activist speeches about race systems, gender, or social justice slogans.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Love of Panama and resentment of U.S. control help fuel Duran in the ring and in trash talk. The film casts him as a national hero as well as a boxer. Friendship, training, fame, and ego still lead the plot. This national pride is clear but not a modern identity campaign.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Flashbacks show U.S. control of the canal zone, troops, and deadly street unrest. Duran’s hate of Americans grows from that history. The film uses it as period backstory for one fighter. It does not turn into a full modern lecture on Western guilt or current politics.

Creator track record context
Key creatives score low on activist work in the cached profiles. Jakubowicz centers courage against hard rule and personal struggle. The other directors, editor, and producers are mainly commercial film workers with little identity-driven public record.
