Haley and five friends meet on Zoom during the 2020 lockdown in London. Haley hires a medium so they can try a séance for fun. One friend lies about sensing a dead schoolmate, and that joke lets a demon slip into their homes. The movie stays short, tense, and scary as the spirit hunts them one by one through their laptop screens.
The film is about lockdown loneliness, bad Zoom habits, and a demon that punishes people who treat a séance like a joke. Viewers mainly see jump scares, friends panicking in their own rooms, and the fear of being stuck alone while someone else dies on camera. Cast and talk stay focused on the séance and the monster, not on modern identity politics or activist lectures. A normal viewer would notice the Zoom gimmick and the scares, not social-justice messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Host.
Woke representation / casting
Mostly young women friends plus one guy, which fits classic horror friend-group and final-girl patterns more than a girlboss or quota push. Light real-world diversity in the cast is present but not sold as the point; race and identity are not used as the story’s focus or marketing hook.
5%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is about the séance, Zoom glitches, jokes, panic, and the demon. No activist lines about race, gender ideology, DEI, or modern identity politics stand out for a general viewer.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core themes are lockdown isolation, disrespecting spirits, and a demon attack. That is lockdown horror mood, not identity politics, queer story, race sermons, or social-justice arcs.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Does not attack Western institutions, Christianity, traditional family, or “toxic masculinity” as a modern activist message. The threat is a summoned demon, not a culture-war lecture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original story with original characters; no known identity-driven rewrite of older canon or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear wave of anti-woke or right-leaning complaints that Host pushes DEI or identity politics. Public talk stayed on scares and the Zoom gimmick.
0%
Creator track record context
Key writers/director mostly sit near zero to low teens in cached scores; Savage’s Host interviews stay craft- and scare-focused. One producer has a higher representation-programming score, but that is mild overall context, not the film’s main creative voice.
