Louis is a successful writer who returns to his family home after twelve years away. He plans to tell his mother, brother, sister, and sister-in-law that he is dying. The visit lasts one tense afternoon in a plain home filled with old anger, shame, and fear. The tone is dark, loud, trapped, and sad, with long arguments and brief memories of the past.
Louis is clearly presented as a gay man, and the film shows a past sexual memory with his male neighbor, Pierre. His family makes a crude joke about gay men and uses an insult aimed at a trans person, while Louis stays mostly silent. The story also shows Antoine bullying his wife Catherine and treating her as if her words do not matter. These identity and gender elements are easy to notice, but the main message stays focused on family pain, death, and the failure to say what matters.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for It's Only the End of the World.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is a group of French actors playing one family and close relatives. The film does not use a diversity-first mix or make race, religion, or gender casting part of its message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The family makes a gay stereotype and an insult aimed at a trans person, but those lines are crude family talk rather than a modern political or activist message. The film has no recurring speech about DEI, identity rights, or current politics.

Identity-driven story themes
Louis is a gay writer, and his return is tied to his old life with men and the death of Pierre, his former lover. The film shows a sexual memory between Louis and Pierre and makes his sexuality part of the family tension. The family links his style with gay men and uses a trans insult, while Louis appears as an outsider who cannot speak freely at home. The film does not give an activist speech, but queer identity is a major part of the central character and his painful history.
75%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Antoine repeatedly talks over Catherine and attacks her when she tries to speak. Catherine appears trapped in a marriage where a loud, controlling man sets the mood for everyone. The film also presents the family home as a place that crushes honest speech. The story keeps this criticism inside one damaged family and does not turn it into a broad attack on men, religion, or Western institutions.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play only hints at Louis’s sexuality, while the film makes it much clearer. The film adds a memory of Louis having sex with his male neighbor, Pierre, which is not in the play. The film also names Pierre as Louis’s former lover. This visible change to the main character is important, although the film still focuses more on death and family conflict than on a public identity debate.
40%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public discussion centered on reviews of the acting, style, and Cannes result. No sustained anti-woke, DEI, or identity-politics complaint is documented, and the supplied X pass reports none.

Creator track record context
Xavier Dolan has a strong history of films about gay relationships, gender identity, homophobia, and outsiders. This film continues that pattern through a gay lead, a male lover, and family discomfort around his identity. Nancy Grant and the Karmitz producers have also supported queer or socially focused art films, but their public profiles are less activist. The director’s repeated queer focus makes this context strong.
