Jim Carrey is the main subject of this documentary. He plays Andy Kaufman while making the 1999 film Man on the Moon, and he stays inside Kaufman's persona for much of the shoot. The story moves between old footage from the set and a later interview with Carrey. The setting is a busy Hollywood production, and the tone is funny, strange, personal, and sometimes uncomfortable.
The film follows Carrey as Andy and Tony Clifton cause trouble for the director, actors, crew, and people who knew Kaufman. It asks whether a performer can lose track of his own identity when a role takes over. Carrey talks about masks, fame, death, freedom, God, and the idea that the self is not fixed. A short section shows Kaufman's old wrestling act using sexist jokes to upset audiences, but the film presents the act as deliberate provocation rather than a current political lesson.

Creator track record context
Chris Smith’s cached record is mostly documentary work without a clear activist identity. Some Vice-linked producers have made socially focused work about politics, war, inequality, and sexuality. Spike Jonze has a past progressive link through a MoveOn.org benefit project. This supports a mild creator track record context, with no title-specific DEI framing.
