Will is a former soldier who lives with his teenage daughter, Tom, in a hidden camp in an Oregon forest. Will suffers from war trauma and teaches Tom how to hide, find food, and survive without a normal home or school. After a stranger finds them, police and social workers move them into a house and try to help them fit into normal life. The quiet drama follows the pair through work, church, youth activities, and another escape as their love faces a hard choice.
Tom grows more curious about other people while Will becomes more afraid of homes, jobs, phones, and public systems. The film gives Tom real outdoor skills, but it shows that her father taught her those skills instead of presenting a sudden heroic talent. The story asks whether a child should stay inside a parent’s private world when she wants friends and a life of her own. The ending lets Tom choose community while Will returns to the woods, so both characters find a path that fits their needs.
