Dutch coach Thomas Rongen loses his job and gets sent to coach the American Samoa soccer team. The team is famous for huge losses, including a record 31-0 defeat years earlier. Rongen is angry, strict, and sure the players cannot win. The story is set on the islands and mixes sports comedy with warm team drama. He must learn how to coach them before a big World Cup qualifier.
A normal viewer will notice strong identity themes around a real teammate, Jaiyah Saelua, who is fa'afafine and transgender. The coach at first mocks her name and identity, then fights with her, then learns to respect her and makes her captain. The team treats her identity as normal local culture, with lines that praise fa'afafine and push acceptance. Marketing and press also highlight Indigenous Pacific pride and this queer storyline. The main plot is still an underdog sports tale, but the acceptance arc is clear and hard to miss.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Next Goal Wins.
Woke representation / casting
Island cast fits American Samoa. The big signal is casting fa'afafine/trans actor Kaimana as real player Jaiyah in a major role, sold in press as a representation choice. Not a race-swap of a white classic hero; still a clear identity-first casting spotlight on a queer role.
52%
Woke political dialogue
Clear talk about fa'afafine identity, deadnaming as wrong, teammates teaching the coach to accept Jaiyah, and warm slogan-like praise (e.g. fa'afafine as “flowers”). Not endless lecture scenes, but easy for a normal viewer to hear.
58%
Identity-driven story themes
Underdog soccer is the main plot, but a major arc is Rongen learning to accept a transgender/fa'afafine teammate: insult, fight, apology, trust, captaincy, and equality-ambassador epilogue. Queer identity is front-facing in story and marketing, so it scores high under the queer-weight rules.
72%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Western coach starts rigid, cruel, and out of step; Samoan warmth and open gender culture are shown as wiser. Waititi has also said Pacific cultures moved past Western hang-ups earlier. Soft cultural contrast through character growth, not a full attack on churches or governments.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Jaiyah’s identity is real and already in the documentary source. The film still amps up Rongen deadnaming and clashing with her more than real life, so the acceptance lesson plays bigger on screen.
18%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No big, sustained right-leaning campaign that this film was forced DEI or “trans propaganda.” Most debate was mixed reviews, box office, or progressive fretting that the trans arc was handled poorly. Anti-woke complaint evidence is thin.
8%
Creator track record context
Waititi’s cached 60 and public indigenous/anti-racism/decolonize framing match this film’s Pacific pride and gender-acceptance focus. Morris and most producers are milder; Waititi’s voice is the main creative driver for this title.
