Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran follows Ashwat Raina, a civil servant who wants India to carry out a secret nuclear test. After an earlier plan fails and Ashwat is blamed, a new government brings him back for another attempt in 1998. He gathers scientists, soldiers, a space expert, and security officer Ambalika at Pokhran in Rajasthan. The team must hide its work from American satellites, foreign spies, and political danger. The film uses a tense spy story with comic moments, strong national pride, and a clear victory tone. The film gives Ambalika a visible security role in a mostly male expert group, and it presents Ashwat’s wife Sushma as an astrophysicist with her own work. These choices stay secondary to the mission. The core message praises teamwork, scientific skill, secrecy, duty, and India’s rise as a nuclear power. The story also uses names and images from the Mahabharata to present the team as five heroes facing a larger enemy. The result is mainly a patriotic historical thriller, with a small identity-focused layer around its women characters and its reshaped account of the real mission.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives Ambalika, a security officer, a prominent place in a mostly male mission team. The film also presents Sushma as an astrophysicist, although she stays in the family subplot. Penty’s interviews say the director wanted a strong woman in a male world, and she trained for an action scene. This makes the female casting an audience-visible representation choice, but the film has one main woman and no wider diversity-first design.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The spoken political lines focus on nuclear power, foreign threats, national respect, and patriotism. The film does not use modern identity, gender, DEI, or activist ideas in its dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story keeps Ambalika as a capable security officer in a mostly male group. The story gives Sushma a professional identity as an astrophysicist while she manages family life during Ashwat’s absence. These choices add a small identity-driven layer, but the mission and national victory remain the main story.
14%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film treats the United States as a rival that uses satellites and pressure against India. That conflict is about 1990s nuclear power and national security, not modern activist criticism of Western culture, family life, religion, or conservative values.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The film makes fictional Ashwat Raina the main planner and mission leader, while real figures such as APJ Abdul Kalam appear mainly in closing footage and credits. The film also recasts the real mission as five Mahabharata-style heroes and adds Ambalika as a security officer built from several real people. These are important identity and role changes in a historical story, but they support patriotic storytelling rather than modern woke messaging.
38%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X evidence pass found no anti-woke complaints. Right-leaning viewers praised the film as patriotic and not woke, while news coverage focused on the producer dispute and mixed reviews rather than a DEI or identity-politics campaign.
0%
Creator track record context
The director has made political satire and defended artistic freedom, but his record does not show a sustained activist or DEI persona. The two writers often focus on overlooked people and capable women. The producer has a mostly commercial record with limited civic causes, while the casting director stresses wider talent access and roles that avoid old stereotypes. This is moderate supporting context, but it does not turn this nationalist thriller into a modern activist film.
