Ponniyin Selvan: Part II continues the story of the Chola royal family in South India around 968 AD. Prince Arulmozhi faces danger as rival armies and Pandyan assassins try to destroy the dynasty. Aditha Karikalan struggles with guilt and his lost love for Nandini. The film has a serious tone, with battles, palace plots, romance, revenge, and questions about power. The film gives important roles to Nandini and Kundavai, who use intelligence and political influence to shape events. These women are often strong and capable, but the story presents them as historical characters rather than as modern activists. The main themes concern family loyalty, revenge, kingship, love, and the cost of war. The film does not center modern identity politics, diversity messaging, or activist ideas.

Identity-driven story themes
Nandini and Kundavai repeatedly show political skill and personal power. The story gives women important control over major events. The film treats this as part of its royal drama and does not connect it to modern gender politics. Male rulers and warriors still control much of the central conflict.
27%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story attacks rival rulers and political betrayal in its own historical setting. It does not target modern Western institutions, Christianity, family life, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes and compresses parts of Kalki’s large novel, but no documented race, gender, sexuality, or identity-based character swap is central to Part II.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported complaints concerned historical accuracy, religious details, music rights, and changes from the novel. The X research found no anti-woke attack, and right-leaning praise was not backlash.

Creator track record context
Mani Ratnam has repeatedly made films about political violence, communal conflict, nationalism, and power. Jeyamohan also writes about social problems, ethics, poverty, and hierarchy. Their work gives the film some political and social context, but neither presents a clear modern DEI or activist brand here.
