Reagan follows Ronald Reagan from his childhood in small-town Illinois to Hollywood, the California governor’s office, and the White House. A fictional former KGB agent tells the story to a younger Soviet officer and treats Reagan as the man who can defeat communism. Reagan faces political enemies, public doubt, an assassination attempt, and the Cold War while Nancy Reagan remains his closest support. The film uses a grand, earnest tone and presents Reagan as a man guided by faith, courage, humor, and love.
The film has one brief identity-related section during the AIDS crisis. A montage shows the AIDS quilt and ACT UP protesters as part of the criticism aimed at Reagan, but the movie does not build a queer character or a queer story around them. The main story instead praises Christian faith, marriage, patriotism, American freedom, and resistance to Soviet communism. It treats Reagan’s speeches and the fall of the Berlin Wall as proof that one determined leader can change history.
