Risen is a biblical drama about a Roman tribune who investigates the missing body of Jesus after the crucifixion. Clavius and his aide work for Pilate to stop resurrection rumors and unrest in Jerusalem. The story starts as a period investigation and becomes a conversion story. Clavius meets the risen Jesus, sees miracles, and leaves Roman duty for a path of faith. The main ideas are evidence, doubt, second chances, and the Resurrection.
There is little modern identity politics in the story itself. The core arc follows a pagan Roman skeptic who faces the Resurrection and moves toward Christian belief. Promo talk about casting Cliff Curtis as Jesus briefly tied that choice to Hollywood diversity debates. On screen the film stays a faith conversion and period mystery, not a race, gender, or social justice message movie.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Risen.
Woke representation / casting
Joseph Fiennes publicly praised casting Cliff Curtis as Jesus as a break from the golden blue-eyed tradition. He tied that choice to Hollywood diversity debates around the Oscars. That is real identity framing in promotion. On screen the cast still does not play like a modern quota lineup.
10%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue stays on Roman duty, investigation, biblical-period politics, and spiritual exchange, with no modern DEI or activist slogans.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The core arc is a pagan Roman skeptic confronting the Resurrection and moving toward Christian belief, with no race, gender, queer, or social-justice plotlines.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film affirms Christian faith. Roman occupation and temple-authority conflict are setting and gospel-adjacent history, not a present-day attack on Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Clavius is original historical fiction, and the Gospel frame is adapted in ordinary faith-film ways, not identity-driven rewrites.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful right-leaning too-woke or DEI campaign against the film. Pushback that exists runs the other way, such as too openly Christian or faith bait-and-switch claims.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creators’ cached profiles sit very low, about 3 to 11. Their work is commercial, faith, and historical rather than activist. That matches a conventional Affirm-style biblical drama.
