Spirited

Core story is redemption, kindness, family regret, and not wrecking a kid’s life online. Those are moral holiday themes, not identity-politics arcs. Light extra weight for incidental LGBTQ visibility (same-sex pair in a couples montage) and a soft multi-faith “other holidays” beat. Race and gender are not the engine of the plot.

The film knocks media spin, online mobs, and rich people who sell hate for profit. That is modern culture critique some viewers will clock. It is not a full activist hit on whiteness, patriarchy, colonial guilt, or Christianity as evil. Christmas faith is joked about but still present. Closer to Dickens-style “be better” than a system-wide culture war film.

Big twists (Present was Scrooge; focus on the ghost team; social-media update) are comic modernization, not identity rewrites of famous figures. Ghost roles are cast with modern diversity, but Scrooge/Present stays a white man and Clint is a new character. Low score for mild diversity casting of flexible ghost parts, not DEI swaps of core Dickens identities.

Cached scores for most key names are low (Anders, Morris, Ferrell, Pasek, Paul, Morgenthau, Tenner, and others). Mild upward pull from George Dewey’s DEI production program and Jessica Elbaum’s female-centric producing focus. That context only lightly matches this title, which is mainly a star comedy musical about personal change.
