Neil Bennett is a wealthy British man on holiday in Acapulco with his sister Alice and her children. When the family learns that Neil’s mother has died, Neil lies about losing his passport so he can stay in Mexico. He trades the luxury hotel for a cheap room, drinks, wanders the beach, and starts seeing Berenice, a local shop worker. Violence follows him, and the film ends with his health and family life in collapse. The tone is quiet, cold, strange, and often darkly funny.
The clearest woke element is the film’s repeated focus on class and wealth. The story places a rich British family beside working-class people in Acapulco and links the family fortune to slaughterhouses. Neil’s romance with Berenice crosses a sharp social divide, while crime and money show how power shapes the lives around him. The film presents wealth, privilege, and social separation as serious problems, but it does not center race, gender, queer identity, DEI, or activist speeches. These class themes matter to the setting and Neil’s escape, yet the film remains more personal and bleak than openly political.

Identity-driven story themes
The film places a very rich British family beside working-class residents of Acapulco. Neil leaves his family wealth and starts a relationship with Berenice, a local shop worker. The story shows how money, status, violence, and family power shape the lives around them. The film treats the class gap as serious, but it does not build a clear modern identity-politics message.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a rich British family and a violent city, but it does not attack Christianity, traditional family roles, or Western institutions through modern activist messaging.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Sundown is an original story with no established characters, source material, or real historical figures being changed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Other reviews and audience posts showed confusion, praise, or dislike of the slow story, but no clear claim that the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing ideas.

Creator track record context
Michel Franco’s cached score is 35/100. His work often returns to class inequality, violence, social exclusion, and power gaps. Sundown continues those themes in a personal story about wealth and family. Tim Roth’s cached score is 10/100, and the cached producers do not show a strong shared activist or DEI pattern. This gives the film mild creator-context weight.
