Hank is a lonely man stranded in the wilderness who wants to end his life. He finds a corpse named Manny, played by Daniel Radcliffe. Manny’s body becomes a strange multi-tool that helps them survive and travel, from flatulence power to other odd body tricks. Their trek mixes friendship, personal shame, and deep loneliness. Hank also keeps thinking about Sarah, a woman he once saw on a bus, as part of his hope of getting back to normal life.
The film puts a same-sex romantic bond between Hank and Manny on screen, including a shared kiss. The directors later said they rewrote the story until the two men fall in love, which they described as an accidental gay necrophilia love story. Hank also dresses as Sarah and role-plays femininity inside their fantasy romance. The arc centers on self-acceptance against social shame about being weird instead of normal. Those queer romance and gender-play elements matter because they are clear to viewers and creator-confirmed, even while the movie still feels like an absurdist buddy survival tale rather than a pure politics lesson.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Swiss Army Man.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Two white male leads and a white woman as the distant love interest. The modern survival setting shows no audience-visible diversity quota, race or gender swaps, or first-X casting messaging. Casting matches a typical small-cast indie buddy film.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Talk centers on survival, bodily functions, teaching normal life ideas, shame, and loneliness. There are no activist slogans, DEI language, or identity-politics speeches about race, gender systems, or progressive causes.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The core arc is self-acceptance against social shame about being weird versus normal. Hank and Manny share a kiss, and the writers said they rewrote the story so the two men fall in love. Hank also dresses as Sarah and role-plays femininity in their fantasy romance. It is not a pure pride-politics film, but the confirmed queer romance and gender-play are clear on screen and raise the weight under LGBTQ scoring.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
There is a light personal critique of social conformity and shame that keep people from love and authenticity. Society’s judgment of weird behavior is a recurring theme. This is not a modern activist attack on capitalism, whiteness, patriarchy as a system, colonial guilt, or Christianity.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original screenplay with no adapted characters, franchise canon, or historical figures rewritten for identity or DEI reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Sundance walkouts and debate were about gross-out humor and odd tone, not woke politics. No sustained right-leaning too-woke campaign was found. Later chatter often treats the film as a cult or queer-coded favorite rather than a culture-war target.
0%
Creator track record context
Co-directors Daniels show progressive and LGBTQ-supportive patterns, including Scheinert’s later queer-story defense and Kwan’s identity-tinged multiverse work. Producers score mostly low, with limited progressive optics noted. That pattern fits this film’s shame themes and confirmed male-romance rewrite without turning it into a DEI showcase.
