The Bluff follows Ercell Bodden, a former pirate who now lives quietly with her family on a remote island in the 19th-century Caribbean. Her old captain, Connor, returns with a violent crew and threatens the life she built. Ercell must use her fighting skills again to protect her husband, son, and sister-in-law. The film has a dark, bloody, and fast-moving revenge story.
The film places a woman at the center of a pirate action story and shows her as a highly skilled fighter and protector. Its main message connects female strength, motherhood, and the right to escape a violent past. Connor treats Ercell as his property, which gives the story a clear conflict about male control. These ideas are visible but remain part of a personal revenge plot instead of a wider political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Bluff.
Woke representation / casting
Priyanka Chopra Jonas leads the film as a powerful former female pirate in a major action role. The marketing and interviews present Ercell as a strong woman who protects her family and controls her own story. The Caribbean setting can support a mixed cast, so the main signal comes from the repeated focus on female strength and agency rather than a clear casting mismatch.

Identity-driven story themes
The film centers on a woman who leaves a violent past and chooses her own life. Ercell’s strength, motherhood, and freedom from male control shape the main character arc. The story presents these ideas clearly, but it stays focused on family survival and revenge instead of wider identity politics.
29%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Connor treats Ercell as his property and uses male power to control her. The story presents his control as abusive and wrong. The conflict targets one violent pirate captain rather than modern Western institutions, religion, family life, or society as a whole.

Creator track record context
Zoe Saldaña, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Cisely Saldaña, and Mariel Saldaña have public records of supporting representation and inclusion. Sarah Halley Finn has described diversity as an important casting goal. Joe Ballarini has supported strong female characters. This context supports the film’s visible female-empowerment focus, but it does not show that the movie carries a broad activist message.
