The film follows Fiona Maye, a senior judge in London’s High Court. Her husband wants an affair because her work has left their marriage cold, while Fiona must decide whether a sick teenager should receive a blood transfusion. Adam Henry is seventeen and belongs to a Jehovah’s Witness family that rejects the treatment for religious reasons. The quiet drama mixes court debate, private pain, and a tense meeting between an older judge and a boy who is close to adulthood.
The film gives a secular court power to overrule a family’s religious choice when the child’s life is at risk. It places a highly skilled woman at the center of legal and moral decisions, but it also shows her choices as limited and damaging. Adam sees Fiona as a guide into a wider world, and he briefly turns away from his faith after she saves him. These choices create a mild challenge to religious authority and traditional family control, but the story stays focused on duty, guilt, loneliness, and the cost of judgment rather than modern activist politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Children Act.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a female High Court judge as its lead, but it does not present her gender as a diversity message. The cast does not show a clear identity-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss law, medical care, and religious freedom. The film does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers a secular court’s decision to overrule a family’s religious choice to save a child. Fiona is a highly skilled woman whose career and childlessness sit outside a simple traditional family role. Adam briefly leaves his faith after Fiona’s ruling, which gives the court a “reason over religion” role. The story treats these ideas as a painful personal problem, not as a broad activist campaign.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film places a secular court and hospital against a Jehovah’s Witness family that refuses life-saving treatment. A hospital lawyer attacks the group’s reading of the Bible as a reason to let a child die. The story gives the court power to overrule the family, but it also shows Fiona’s choice causing guilt and later harm. The critique of religious and family authority is clear, yet it is not tied to current activist politics.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Ian McEwan’s fictional novella without changing a character’s race, gender, sexuality, or role for identity reasons. Its changes are plot and scene choices.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Other visible discussion focuses on the ending, religious treatment, and acting rather than woke or DEI complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Richard Eyre has a liberal humanist record but no strong DEI activism pattern. Ian McEwan often explores women’s vulnerability, religion, and moral duty. Some producers and the casting director have diversity-related work or views. These links add mild context, but they do not dominate this film.
