Rio Cutler is a young boy living in the New Mexico Territory in 1880. He shoots his abusive father while trying to save his mother, then runs with his older sister Sara. The pair cross paths with Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett while Rio’s uncle hunts them. The film is a grim, violent western about fear, family, crime, and growing up too soon.
Rio looks up to Billy because Billy seems free, but Billy’s violence brings pain to everyone around him. Garrett offers a harder path based on law, duty, and facing the harm a person has done. Sara begins as Rio’s guide, yet the story later makes her suffering the reason for his rescue mission. The film centers on male role models, family abuse, and the hard choice between violence and responsibility.
