In 1968, Donald Crowhurst enters a dangerous solo race around the world. Crowhurst is a British inventor and family man, but his boat is not ready and his sailing skills are limited. Fear, debt, pride, and public pressure make it hard for him to turn back. Crowhurst begins to falsify his sailing records, and isolation causes his mental health to decline. The film follows his lies, shame, and collapse while his wife Clare protects their children and manages the crisis at home.
The film shows how male pride and the need to seem heroic can damage a family. Crowhurst’s story also shows how reporters, sponsors, and the public can turn a complicated person into a simple hero. Clare speaks against the pressure created by that story, but the film does not develop modern activist or identity-based politics. The film does not focus on race, gender identity, sexuality, or queer themes. Its main themes are pride, shame, family duty, mental strain, dishonesty, compassion, forgiveness, and the suffering caused by public expectations.
