The Old Way follows Colton Briggs, a former killer who now runs a small store and farm in the Montana territory with his wife, Ruth, and their 12-year-old daughter, Brooke. The son of a man Colton killed years earlier returns with a gang and murders Ruth. Colton takes Brooke on a hard ride to find the killers before they can escape. The movie has a grim, quiet Western tone with sudden gunfights, rough jokes, and a revenge story.
The movie centers on a father and daughter who struggle to show fear, grief, and love in usual ways. Brooke stays calm after her mother’s death, thinks in blunt logical steps, and learns to shoot as Colton teaches her the life he tried to leave behind. Her skill matters in the final fight, but the story ties it to her father’s training and to the cycle of violence between families. The main themes are inherited behavior, family bonds, guilt, and the cost of revenge.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Old Way.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Brooke is a prominent capable girl, but the story makes her skill part of her father’s training and the family plot. The cast does not show a clear representation-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film includes period speeches about God, law, revenge, and a merchant’s power. The story does not turn these subjects into current political or activist messaging.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie makes the central father-daughter bond depend on their unusual emotional responses to fear and grief. Brooke stays calm after her mother dies, sorts objects carefully, and speaks in blunt, logical ways. The film presents both characters as outsiders with a disability-related difference, while the director has called them people on the spectrum. The story uses this idea to explore family and inherited violence, not a wider political cause.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The opening criticizes a powerful merchant who uses God and business to control neighbors, but this is a period villain plot. The story does not make a modern attack on men, family, Christianity, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original Western with no established characters, book canon, or real historical figure at its center. No identity-based canon change appears.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account praised the Cage western as “Not woke. Great movie” and asked for a sequel. The post did not answer a live pile-on or point to a specific scene. The available search found no clear run of claims that the film pushes DEI, girlboss ideas, race or gender swaps, anti-male messaging, or an LGBT agenda. The available evidence is fringe and does not show a notable backlash.
8%
Creator track record context
Writer Carl W. Lucas has explored migrant workers, immigration, and white male disillusionment in earlier scripts. That gives his record a mild social-issue signal. Director Brett Donowho mainly works in action, crime, thriller, and Western films. The producer group has no strong public record of activist or identity-driven work.
