The Protégé is a traditional action movie about a highly skilled contract killer named Anna. After her lifelong mentor and father figure Moody is killed, Anna sets out to get revenge. She must fight a rival killer named Rembrandt as she searches for the murderers. The film features traditional action and avoids modern social lectures or identity politics. The female lead is highly capable but also vulnerable, steering clear of typical girlboss themes.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Protégé.
Woke representation / casting
The film casts Maggie Q, an Asian female lead, in a prominent action hero role. However, her casting is natural because her character is a Vietnamese orphan, and the movie integrates her heritage into the plot without identity signaling or diversity quotas.
5%
Woke political dialogue
There is no modern political dialogue, activist lecturing, or social justice commentary. The dialogue stays entirely focused on character relationships, action beats, and plot development.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The narrative is a classic, straightforward tale of revenge and survival. It completely avoids themes of colonial guilt, patriarchy, intersectionality, or modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film does not critique Western culture or institutions through an activist lens. The corrupt villains are typical of standard B-movie action tropes rather than a political critique of capitalism or Western society.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
The movie had no anti-woke backlash. Anti-woke audiences and critics welcomed it as a refreshing, traditional action movie that avoids preachy girlboss tropes and political agendas.
0%
Creator track record context
The core creative team, including director Martin Campbell and writer Richard Wenk, is almost entirely apolitical and focuses on pure action entertainment. Only one minor producer has a history of activist-focused work, leaving no impact on the film itself.
