The Vast of Night follows Fay Crocker, a teenage switchboard operator in Cayuga, New Mexico, in the late 1950s. Fay and her friend Everett Sloan, a local radio host, hear a strange signal during a high school basketball game and try to learn where it came from. Their search moves through phone calls, radio broadcasts, old tapes, and dark roads. The film builds a quiet, tense mood and saves its clearest alien sight for the end.
The film gives a long and serious place to Billy, a black former soldier who says the military used Black and Mexican workers for secret jobs because people would be less likely to believe them. An older woman named Mabel says her son was taken and suggests that people ignored her because she was a woman. Fay and Everett treat both accounts as clues, and the final events support the idea that dismissed witnesses may have told the truth. These race and gender themes matter to two major story sections, but the main story remains a small-town UFO mystery.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Vast of Night.
Woke representation / casting
The two central teens are a white girl and a white boy, which fits the period setting. The supporting story gives major speaking parts to Billy, a black veteran, and Mabel, an older woman. The director said he wanted strong roles for women, people of color, and older people, so the casting has a clear representation aim. The film does not show a broad identity pattern across most of its main cast.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Billy says the military used Black and Mexican workers for secret jobs because the public would be less likely to believe them. He also describes secret bases, illness, and a cover-up. Everett puts the account on the radio, giving the race-based claim a large place in the film. The rest of the dialogue centers on UFO fear, radio work, and Cold War paranoia rather than current activist slogans.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
The film treats the voices of people who are easy to dismiss as key evidence. Billy links his treatment to race, while Mabel is presented as an older woman whose account is not trusted. Fay and Everett listen to both accounts, and the final alien event supports the idea that those witnesses were telling the truth. These themes return in two major sections, but the UFO mystery remains the main story.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents the military as secretive and willing to hide dangerous work. The film ties that secrecy to the use of Black and Mexican workers who were expected to be ignored. The story also shows an older woman’s account being treated as madness or personal trouble. This criticism is tied to the 1950s UFO plot and does not become a broad attack on Christianity, family life, capitalism, or modern Western society.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original characters and does not change an established character, source, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public discussion mostly praises the atmosphere and filmmaking or criticizes the long dialogue and ending. The provided X pass found a small account praising the movie as a non-woke exception, not attacking it for woke content.

Creator track record context
The available creator summaries rate Patterson at 10/100 and the other key people mostly at 0 to 12/100. Their records show local storytelling and professional film work rather than a recurring DEI or activist career. Patterson’s interviews about this title add a small signal because he wanted strong roles for women, people of color, and older people. The overall creator record remains mild.
