The Young Messiah follows seven-year-old Jesus as he leaves Alexandria with Mary, Joseph, and their relatives. The family travels toward Nazareth and later Jerusalem while Herod’s son sends the Roman soldier Severus to find and kill him. Jesus sees strange visions, heals the sick, brings a dead child back to life, and does not understand why he can do these things. The movie has a serious, slow, faith-centered tone, with danger, family worry, and quiet moments of wonder.
The central question is how a child can learn that he is the Son of God while still growing like a human child. Mary and Joseph hide the truth because they want to protect Jesus, so he keeps asking about his birth and his powers. The film shows Roman cruelty, slavery, an attempted rape, and the killing of children as dangers in the ancient world. Mary acts as a brave mother, while Jesus helps the sick, the blind, and strangers. The story ends with Jesus accepting his divine identity and trusting his parents and his heavenly Father.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Young Messiah.
Woke representation / casting
The film uses mostly light-skinned European actors for the central Jewish family in an ancient Judean setting. That is a visible casting mismatch in major roles, especially the role of Jesus. The director said he chose the child after a large acting search and noted a Jewish link in his family. The movie does not build a repeated identity-based casting pattern across the story.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has lines about Roman rule, slavery, kings, rebels, and faith. Those lines fit the ancient setting and do not push modern identity or activist politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story centers on Jesus learning that he is the Son of God. Mary protects her child, and Jesus helps the sick, the blind, and strangers. The gender and class conflicts come from the ancient religious story.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Herod and the Roman army are shown as violent rulers who hunt families and rebels. The film does not connect that conflict to modern capitalism, patriarchy, Christianity, or current political institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie adds a fictional childhood adventure and changes some family relationships from the source material. It does not make a race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role swap.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported complaints focused on biblical accuracy, invented material, casting looking too white, and film quality. Those complaints did not accuse the movie of pushing DEI, identity politics, or a modern activist message. The supplied X pass found no matching anti-woke posts.

Creator track record context
Anne Rice had public support for gay rights, and Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh’s strongest related work dealt with abuse against women. Cyrus Nowrasteh’s known work and title interviews focus on faith, history, religious freedom, and family. The producers have little recorded DEI or identity activism. This gives the creative group a low but nonzero creator track record context score.
