The film follows Antonina Zabinski, a gentle but brave keeper at the Warsaw Zoo. In 1939, Nazi Germany invades Poland, bombs the zoo, and forces Antonina and her husband Jan to work under Nazi control. The couple turns empty animal cages and hidden spaces into hiding places for Jewish people escaping the Warsaw Ghetto. Antonina also faces danger from Lutz Heck, a Nazi official who wants the zoo’s animals and makes unwanted advances toward her. The story is a serious war drama with tender animal scenes, family danger, fear, and moments of hope.
The film makes Antonina’s female point of view the main lens for a Holocaust rescue story. Antonina is shown as strong through care, courage, and clever choices, while Jan remains an important partner and resistance worker. The film links kindness, motherhood, animals, and human rescue, and it presents femininity as a form of strength rather than weakness. The story also treats refugees and the duty to protect Jewish people as major moral concerns. These themes are clear and repeated, but the film stays focused on a real wartime rescue.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Zookeeper's Wife.
Woke representation / casting
Jessica Chastain plays the real Polish and Russian-born heroine Antonina, so the lead role follows the source story rather than a made-up diversity choice. The cast stays mostly European and matches the Warsaw setting, with no obvious race-based ensemble design. The film and its marketing still stress a female-led point of view and a woman’s heroism. That identity framing adds a mild signal, but the casting itself is not a strong mismatch.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters condemn Nazi persecution and speak about saving Jewish people, but those lines belong to the World War II rescue story. The film does not use modern identity, gender-role, DEI, or activist political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Antonina’s female point of view shapes the whole story. The film repeatedly presents care, motherhood, softness, and emotional skill as forms of strength. Antonina uses those traits to calm animals, protect children, shelter Jewish families, and deceive a Nazi official. Jan also leads resistance work, so the film does not make men useless or turn the rescue into a simple girlboss story. The message is identity-focused and feminist in tone, but it stays tied to a real woman in wartime.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film attacks Nazi tyranny, racial persecution, and sexual abuse within its World War II plot. It does not turn that history into a modern attack on Western institutions, family life, Christianity, or ordinary traditional roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Diane Ackerman’s nonfiction account of real people and keeps the rescue story centered on Antonina and Jan. The added intimacy between Antonina and Lutz Heck changes the drama, but it does not change anyone’s identity or turn the real history into a DEI message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke posts, boycott talk, defenses, or review-bombing about the film. News and review coverage discussed the Holocaust, the female viewpoint, and film quality, but no clear right-leaning complaint said the film pushed woke or DEI ideas.

Creator track record context
Niki Caro has a cached score of 62/100 because her work often centers strong female characters and gender roles. Jessica Chastain has a cached producer score of 50/100 because she supports gender equality and female-led projects. Robbie Tollin has a cached score of 52/100 because she has worked on women’s and queer projects. Angela Workman, Diane Ackerman, most producers, and the casting directors have low cached scores and no clear activist profile. The combined context is moderate, with the strongest signal coming from Caro and the female-led focus of this film.
