Richard Wershe Jr. is a poor teenager living with his father and older sister in 1980s Detroit. His father sells guns and cannot guide his children, while his sister struggles with drug addiction. FBI agents use Rick as a young informant because he knows local drug dealers. Rick then sells drugs himself, gets shot, and receives a life sentence as the family falls apart. The movie is grim, tense, and sad, but it also has moments of rough humor.
The movie gives most of its time to the white Wershe family, even though Rick moves through a mostly black neighborhood and drug world. It shows Black dealers, friends, and police officers as important people, but they get less detail than Rick, his father, and his sister. A repeated point is that Black suspects received harsher prison treatment while Rick was used by the FBI and later punished. The story also attacks federal agents and the courts for using a child and then abandoning him, but the main focus stays on family damage, poverty, crime, and lost childhood.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for White Boy Rick.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film casts a white teenager as the real White Boy Rick in 1980s Detroit. The Black neighborhood and supporting cast fit the story rather than a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film includes a direct line that compares “white time” with “black time” in prison sentencing. Rick’s case is tied to the harsh life sentence for a nonviolent drug crime. The line and the sentencing issue make a brief racial justice point. The movie does not repeat modern identity slogans or build the whole plot around speeches.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
Rick’s story repeatedly shows a white teen moving through a mostly Black Detroit drug world. The film contrasts his treatment with the harsher treatment faced by Black suspects. The FBI uses a child, helps turn him into a dealer, and later leaves him to take the blame. This gives the crime story a clear message about race, poverty, and unequal punishment, but the main arc still follows Rick’s family and choices.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Federal agents recruit Rick, push him into drug dealing, and later abandon him. The courts give him a life sentence after he has been used as an informant. The film presents the War on Drugs and local law enforcement as systems that damage poor families and protect themselves. This is a strong institutional critique, but it comes through a true crime story and does not target religion, marriage, or traditional culture.
38%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is based on a real person’s life, not an established fictional canon. Its changes mainly compress events and combine people for a feature-length story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints, boycotts, or review-bombing aimed at this film. Reviews that debated its racial focus came from general critics and were not anti-woke attacks.
0%
Creator track record context
Yann Demange has a mixed record and has spoken about racism, outsiders, and underrepresented people. His interviews about this film stress empathy, poverty, lost childhood, and the American Dream. Darren Aronofsky adds a smaller progressive context through his past climate and social-justice work. The writers and most other stored creators have little public activist history, so the combined signal is moderate rather than dominant.
