After a worldwide blackout and a bus crash, only Jack Malik still remembers the Beatles. He pretends their songs are his own and becomes a huge star with help from Ed Sheeran. The movie follows his rise in the music business and his romance with Ellie. He also faces a greedy record label that wants to control his image and his work. In the end he confesses the truth on stage, shares the songs for free, and chooses love and honesty over fame.
The film has a British Indian lead and an interracial romance, but race is never discussed in the story. Press and interviews treated the casting as a big step for South Asian stars more than the plot itself did. A music executive is shown as greedy and the label is mocked in a light way. There is no social justice speech, no identity-driven plot, and no LGBTQ storyline. The real focus stays on music, fame, and choosing the person you love.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Yesterday.
Woke representation / casting
The lead is British Indian and the romance is interracial in a modern UK setting where race is never discussed on screen. Press and interviews treated that casting as a milestone for a South Asian rock-star lead. Supporting roles add some diversity without a forced checklist pattern. Representation weight sits more in casting optics and coverage than in story messaging.
20%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No social-justice, identity, race, gender-theory, or DEI-style speeches. Dialogue stays on fame, romance, Beatles songs, and standard music-industry shark talk.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Core story is a fantasy rom-com about love versus stardom, honesty, and rediscovering the Beatles’ music. Jack’s ethnicity, gender politics, and queer identity are not plot engines.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Kate McKinnon’s Debra Hammer is a broad caricature of a greedy LA record executive. The label brands Jack’s album and he later dumps the songs free online. That is light anti-corporate music-industry satire, not modern activist critique of patriarchy, whiteness, Christianity, or Western culture.
16%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original screenplay premise, not an identity rewrite of established characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful right-leaning or anti-woke campaign treated the film as DEI propaganda. Public noise was mixed reviews, a writer-credit dispute, and a trailer lawsuit, not “too woke” complaints.

Creator track record context
Danny Boyle is left-leaning with cultural-sensitivity comments such as later regret framing around earlier work. Richard Curtis is a humanitarian with mild diversity and feminist self-critique of past films. Other creators score much lower, so the team is mildly progressive rather than hard identity-activist.
