Beth Parsons lives with her husband, Kevin, and their eight-year-old son, Joshua, in a quiet suburban home. Joshua brings home an imaginary friend named Z, and his behavior soon becomes violent and strange. Beth tries to protect him while Kevin and a doctor treat the problem as a normal childhood phase. Beth later learns that she knew Z as a child, and the creature has returned through her son. The story connects Z to buried childhood pain, family abuse, and trauma that passes between generations.
The film follows Beth as fear and confusion guide her through the family crisis. Kevin often ignores her warnings, while Beth cares for Joshua and faces problems involving her sick mother and troubled sister. The story focuses on motherhood, memory, survival, and the effects of abuse. The film does not show political dialogue, identity-based themes, or a wider cultural message. Its frightening events matter as family horror because Beth must face an old trauma and a cruel bond with Z.

Creator track record context
Brandon Christensen has a low activist signal and mainly makes practical horror films. Colin Minihan has a moderate context score because his work often gives women active roles and includes a same-sex marriage in another film. Kurtis David Harder and Chris Ball have higher context scores tied to queer-focused work outside Z. The title has a mixed creator background, but the film itself does not use those stronger themes.
