Person profile
Personal context
Andy Kaufman was an actor and performance comedian known for Taxi, his Elvis impersonation, the Foreign Man and Tony Clifton characters, and deliberately unpredictable stage and television appearances. His work often blurred performance and reality, using awkwardness, provocation and audience discomfort rather than conventional jokes. His public record contains no documented identity, DEI or activist advocacy, or clear partisan persona; a brief political image sequence at his 1979 Carnegie Hall show was an isolated performance. His wrestling act included taunts and matches with women, but it was not accompanied by documented advocacy for or against women’s rights.
