Personal context
Hillary Clinton is an American politician, lawyer, and former First Lady, U.S. senator, secretary of state, and presidential candidate. Her public work has repeatedly focused on women’s rights, children’s welfare, health care, and human rights. As First Lady, she co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and spoke at the 1995 UN World Conference on Women, declaring that “women’s rights are human rights.” As secretary of state, she advocated for LGBT rights internationally; she later supported marriage equality and campaigned for reproductive rights. Her public record also includes a long Democratic political career and earlier opposition to same-sex marriage, a position she later changed.
