John McEnroe

Personal context

Summary

John McEnroe is a former world No. 1 tennis player and longtime commentator who has also appeared as himself in films and television, including Curb Your Enthusiasm and Never Have I Ever. His public persona is closely associated with his fiery on-court outbursts and blunt commentary. He has called himself a feminist and supported equal prize money for women tennis players; in 1980, he turned down a lucrative exhibition in apartheid-era South Africa. He founded the Johnny Mac Tennis Project to expand tennis access and address racial, social, and economic barriers for young people; no sustained party or LGBTQ advocacy role is on record.
