Personal context
Molly Ringwald is an actor, author, and singer known for the John Hughes films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink. Her work and public writing often revisit adolescence and women’s experiences; in 2018, she reconsidered the Hughes films through the lens of sexual harassment and #MeToo, and wrote about harassment she experienced in Hollywood, calling for change and greater opportunities for women to tell stories. She also campaigned for Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire in 2016, served as an L.A. Pride grand marshal, and appeared with her family in a public service announcement opposing California’s Proposition 8.
