Stephen McKinley Henderson

Personal context

Summary

Stephen McKinley Henderson is an actor, director, and educator known for decades of theater work, especially his performances in August Wilson’s plays, alongside film and television roles including Lincoln, Manchester by the Sea, and Dune. His public record includes activism in the late 1960s and 1970s: he tried to raise money for the Black Panther Party’s free breakfast program and used theater to address the issues of his time. In a 2021 commencement address, he spoke about a lack of empathy and divisions across racial, cultural, and gender lines. No public party campaigning or ongoing DEI affiliation is on record.
