2018 · Based on 1 season, 13 episodes through May 27, 2018 ·
Deception follows Cameron Black, a famous Las Vegas illusionist whose career collapses when the public learns that he has a secret twin, Jonathan. Jonathan is sent to prison after a rival frames him, so Cameron joins an FBI team to solve strange crimes and clear his brother's name. Cameron uses stage tricks, fake scenes, and bold plans in modern New York while he chases a mystery woman tied to his family's past. The show has a fast, glossy, and often silly crime-adventure tone.
The main visible representation choice is a mixed FBI and magic team led in the field by Black agent Kay Daniels. The group also includes Black producer Dina Clark, Latino agent Mike Alvarez, and Korean American street magician Jordan Kwon, all in recurring roles. The show does not make race, gender, sexuality, or identity politics part of the cases or character arcs. Its main themes are family loyalty, public image, trust, crime, and the use of illusion to catch criminals, so the identity-driven material stays at the casting level.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Deception.
Woke representation / casting
The main team has a black female FBI partner, a black female producer, a Latino FBI agent, and a Korean American magician in prominent recurring roles. This creates a clear mixed-cast pattern across the FBI and magic teams. The show does not explain the choices through identity or promote them as a diversity message. The characters are used mainly for their jobs and their part in the cases.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on magic tricks, FBI work, family secrets, and criminal plans. The show has no recurring activist, identity-politics, or left-wing political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Cameron and Jonathan's conflict is about family, prison, betrayal, and public fame. The season does not build its story around race, gender, sexuality, or modern identity activism.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The FBI, police, and foreign officials sometimes include corrupt people, but those are individual crime plots. The show does not present a recurring attack on men, family life, Christianity, capitalism, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Deception is an original series about Cameron Black and his twin, not an adaptation of an established character or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke complaints were found. Public discussion focused on the magic premise, plot logic, ratings, and cancellation rather than DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Chris Fedak's cached creator score is 15/100, with no clear activist or representation-focused record. Most listed writers and directors also have low or modest cached scores. Kai Yu Wu and Rob Hardy are the main higher-scoring exceptions because of diversity-related work. Those backgrounds provide some context, but the show itself does not strongly carry those themes.
